FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Got questions about Blendtek’s ultrasonic blending technology? Here are the most common ones we hear from lubricant blenders worldwide.
The Science Behind the Blend
How does the Blendtek system work?
We use ultrasonic cavitation: high-frequency sound waves create microscopic bubbles that collapse, generating powerful microjets. These instantly disperse additives on a molecular level – much faster and more efficiently than traditional stirring or heating.
Will it damage sensitive additives or polymers?
No. Residence time in the ultrasound unit is less than a second per pass, so exposure is too short to cause degradation. Viscosity modifiers and heat-sensitive components remain fully intact.
What about late-stage additives?
Even if viscosity modifiers are added minutes before the end, the ultrasonic circuit disperses them instantly. The high-velocity stream ensures a perfectly uniform final blend.
Blending Process & Equipment
What flow rates does it support? What power supply is needed?
The system works across a wide range of flow rates. Not all base oil needs to pass through the unit for the blend to be perfectly uniform.
What is the maximum and minimum batch size?
From as little as 500 kg in an IBC to 40 tonnes per hour with multiple units in tandem. There’s effectively no upper limit.
What extra equipment is required?
In most cases, existing pumps and pipework are sufficient. Installation is simple, retrofittable, and low-cost.
Can it scale with my business?
Yes. Start with a single unit, then expand to turnkey multi-unit solutions as production grows.
What power supply is needed?
A standard domestic supply – no special electrical infrastructure required.
Can it blend at ambient temperature?
Yes. Heating is not required for base oils or additives, saving both time and energy.
Can the unit be flushed?
Yes, the system can be easily flushed, just like standard piping.
Operations & Logistics
How many operators are needed?
One operator can run the system while others manage filling. Since blending is at ambient temperature, there’s no cooling delay before filling.
Are there safety risks?
The system eliminates the need for gas boilers and hot oils, improving overall site safety. Some customers have even reduced insurance premiums.
What if a batch fails QC?
Re-blending is easy: just adjust the formulation and re-circulate. No reheating or long delays required.
How does it support sustainability goals?
By cutting energy use by more than 90%, reducing CO₂ emissions, and minimising waste, the Blendtek system directly supports your sustainability goals.
